Ted Higgins is the founder of SQLSmarty.com, a website designed to share knowledge within the SQL Server Community. Ted has 23 years’ experience in the Information Technology field, which includes positions held at Tennessee Valley Authority, Sprint, IBM, and Dell Inc.
Ted joined the US Air Force in 1981 and became an emergency room technician. After four years in the medical corps, Ted cross-trained into electronics and was stationed at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma, working as a combat electronics technician in the 3rd Combat Information Systems Group (3 CISG). Ted was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1986.
After the Air Force, Ted migrated to Knoxville Tennessee and attended the University of Tennessee. Ted worked as an electrical estimator/project manager for two large electrical contractors in Knoxville. Ted also worked as a programmer/designer for fire protection systems that were used by the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Tennessee, and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Ted also held a position of fire protection design/test engineer at Brown’s Ferry Nuclear Plant in Decatur Alabama.
Ted left Knoxville in 1995 to move to Kansas City Missouri. Ted took a position with Sprint Telecom where he held positions in operations, translations development and finally as a Tandem DBA. As a DBA, Ted managed several projects working with developers and data analysts to design high-performance OLTP databases. Ted also implemented and maintained several telecom databases, which included routine maintenance, performance tuning, and proof-of-concept programming.
Ted left Sprint in 2005 to pursue a position with Dell Inc. in Austin Texas. Ted was a Tandem DBA with the manufacturing development team for 8 years. Ted performed database design, implementation, and database tuning during his tenure.
Ted migrated off the legacy Tandem Nonstop Architecture in 2014 to work with the SQL Server team at Dell. Ted works as a project DBA where he works with developers to design and implement databases, server configurations, and assist with performance tuning. Ted has written and published PowerShell modules specific to the DBA tasks within the team. Ted’s focus is on database performance tuning, scripting, and performing proof-of-concept projects.
Some of Ted’s interests include: NHRA and F-1 racing, guitars, weight training, martial arts, reading and programming.
